Usability evaluation of educational app for cognitive improvement for students with developmental disabilities

Abstract
To propose further research on optimal user-oriented educational apps for students with developmental disabilities, this study evaluates the usability of an educational app, Dobrain, and closely considering its user interface. A heuristic usability evaluation was conducted on 10 special education teachers with experience teaching students with developmental disabilities. Data were collected and analyzed through a survey and focus group interview. The study revealed that the overall average score of the usability evaluation was 3.90, the highest area was the organizational domain, and the lowest level was the functional domain. The focus group suggested improving the presentation and feedback, adjusting the duration and difficulty, option availability for numbers and reaction time, and activity start, among others. An intuitive interface was also requested. Based on these results, the development directions of educational apps considering the characteristics of students with developmental disabilities and measures to increase the applicability of special education fields were discussed.
